Metro teams kickoff district 32-5A meet

BROWNSVILLE—The district 32-5A tennis meet got underway Thursday morning at the Brownsville Tennis Center, The action will continue into today with finals matches and teams will have an opportunity to earn a trip to the regional meet.
Brownsville Porter who is serving as the host team, feels good through their first day of competition.
“We are doing fine, my girls doubles are seeding first and are holding their own,” said Porter coach Jaime Guillen. “Our other girls doubles who were not seeded beat the number one seed in Edcouch-Elsa so now they are in the semis. So far it’s going good for us.”
With the district logged jam with talent, it is no surprise to Guillen that this year’s talent level is at its peak.
“The kids were excited to get out here,” Guillen said. “Half of our tournaments were cancelled due to weather but coming into today it is just a culmination of what we have done so far in the season.”
Brownsville Veterans on the other hand looked strong through their first day and are looking to repeat with another district title.
“Things are looking as expected, our girls team and mixed team is looking pretty good,” said Veterans coach Leo Casanova. “I hope we are able to reach our goal and if everything goes as planned that is what we are looking to do, our girls won it all here last year, there is still a lot of tennis to be played.”
BVM seniors Isabella Vasquez and Issayana Gavinl have been doubles partners since their freshman year and are hoping to go out with a bang their senior year and make the regional meet.
“We are excited to be out here, I was nervous coming in but when I got here I was ready for it and we have practiced all year long,” Vasquez said.
“I honestly don’t feel like this is our last year,” Gavinl said. “Although I know it is our last year it is just crazy, it feels like just yesterday we were told we were going to play doubles and little did we know it would take us this far and last this long.”
The duo are looking for their first district title together in doubles.
“You can see how hard everyone else has worked,” Gavinl said. “For many people they have played their whole lives and it didn’t start in high school. Everyone here deserves to be here and we are excited to see the work everyone else has put in.”
