SAN BENITO — Organizers call it their “Happy Birthday Texas” event and describe it as a celebration where people are able to time travel back to 1836.
The Texas Heritage and Independence Celebration Association, Inc. will host a Texas Independence Celebration event at the San Benito Stock Show Fairgrounds tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
In addition to food and craft vendors, a Bar-B-Q cook-off, an art contest and live music, the event will feature three narrated battle reenactments.
The Battle of Gonzales begins at 12 p.m., the Battle of the Alamo begins at 2 p.m. and the Battle of San Jacinto begins at 4 p.m.
Attendees will be able to participate in the “signing” of the Texas Declaration of Independence with the names of the 59 Texas Patriots.
Founded in 2007, members of the Texas Heritage and Independence Celebration Association, Inc. work toward “promoting the history of Texas, retelling stories and honoring the memory of those who came before us and shaped Texas.”
The organization created the Texas Independence Celebration event 12 years ago, to commemorate and honor the bravery and courage of all Texians and Tejanos who fought and died for Texas Independence from Mexico.
“In history, most of us have forgotten that Tejanos were involved and we’re trying to be inclusive in this history,” said Texas Heritage and Independence Celebration Association, Inc. president Federico Garza. “When we’re doing the battle reenactments, we hope people will understand that there were both Tejanos and Texians fighting for Texas’ independence.”
