MERCEDES — Is it really lonely at the top?
Probably not for The Science Academy of South Texas, which is the only school in the Valley to be recognized as a Project Lead The Way Distinguished School.
Not only does the campus, part of the South Texas Independent School District, stand out in the Valley, it’s one of only two high schools in Texas to receive the honor.
“We are extremely proud of our students for their innovation, dedication and excellence,” said Irma Castillo, principal.
“This recognition attests to our teachers’ hard work and the rigor of our curriculum,” she said. “We are not surprised that our students nationally represent what we strive for every day — inspiring world readiness through purposeful instruction for relevant learning.”
Project Lead The Way is a nonprofit organization that serves millions of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students and teachers in schools across the U.S. A total of 64 high schools received the honor. The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PTLW program.
Science Academy received the honor for providing broad access for students through computer science, biomedical science and engineering.
“It is a great honor to recognize The Science Academy of South Texas for their commitment to students,” said Vince Bertram, President and CEO of PLTW. “They are a model for what school should look like, and they should be very proud of ensuring students have the knowledge and skills to be career ready and successful on any career path they choose.”
