Friends of Animal Rescue to host valentine themed events

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Here’s something you don’t see every day.

Two rescue dogs dressed in a bridal dress and tux are going to take a walk down the aisle and exchange special marriage vows in front of the scenic Island bay as part of several furry Valentine-themed events lined up this week on the Island.

The Friends of Animal Rescue shelter will host a Puppy Bingo fundraiser at the Inn of South Padre Island from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Each bingo card costs $2 and there will be bingo prizes.

Additionally, there will be a raffle and raffle prizes.

“It’s such a fun activity and the crowd that we get for Valentine’s Day is amazing,” said Friends of Animal Rescue president and co-founder Jacky Conrad. “A lot of people love to play, have a good time socializing and doing something fun that supports Friends of Animal Rescue at the same time.”

Wedding time

The shelter will also host its seventh annual Dog Gone Wedding Saturday, Feb. 16 at Tequila Sunset from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year the bride will be a dog that has been adopted from Friends of Animal Rescue and the groom will be a Friends of Animal Rescue dog available for adoption.

The bride will be dressed in a traditional white dog wedding dress and the groom will wear a tux.

Additionally, there will be both a wedding cake for the dogs and cake for attendees.

“We will have special vows prepared for the bride and groom like I promise not to look at other dogs and things like that,” Conrad said with a laugh. “We don’t try to make it serious. It’s all done with fun.”

In addition to a dog wedding, there will be adoptable animals, a pet bakery, raffle, pet boutique, a fashion show, photo booth and contests for best trick and best dressed male/female guests.

There will be a $5 entry fee per contest for each competing dog.

The top three winners in each category will receive a trophy and will be able to be in the wedding party.

All dogs attending the Dog Gone Wedding must be current on their rabies vaccine, show no sign of aggression and be on a leash at all times.

All proceeds from both of the events will go to the Friends of Animal Rescue.

“As always, we’re so lucky and fortunate to have the support of the community and places to host these events,” Conrad said.
