BISD, Zendejas part ways

The Brownsville Independent School District and former Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas issued a joint statement early Wednesday formalizing her resignation as Superintendent of Schools and departure from the district.

The two parties issued the statement at the conclusion of a Board of Trustees meeting that lasted into the early morning hours. It stated that the board and Zendejas had reached an agreement that allows Zendejas to pursue other interests and permits the board to pursue hiring another superintendent.

“The board and Dr. Zendejas have entered into the agreement believing it is in their respective best interests and in the best interests of the district,” the statement said.

Zendejas thanked the present and past Board of Trustees for providing her the opportunity to serve as superintendedt.

At a Jan. 11 meeting the board placed Zendejas on administrative leave with pay. The board later hired Sylvia Ann Reyna Hatton of McAllen as interim superintendent.

In the statement the board expressed its best wishes to Zendejas and said it would soon begin its search for a new superintendent.
