HARLINGEN — An 81-year-old man hit by a vehicle while handling luggage at Valley International Airport remains in serious condition following surgery at Valley Baptist Medical Center, police say.
Neither the name of the victim nor the driver has been released as a police investigation continues, Sgt. Larry Moore of the Harlingen Police Department said Friday afternoon.
“At this time there have been no charges yet,” Moore said. “Our highway enforcement is still investigating, so they haven’t made any official charges as of yet.”
Moore said the victim remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The victim was in the baggage loading and unloading lane at Valley International Airport when he was struck by a vehicle about 11:40 a.m. Thursday.
It is not known if excess speed was a factor in the accident, although the approach to the airport’s departure and arrival entrances consists of a loading lane along the curb and three other lanes. The speed limit of 15 mph is marked, and safety measures include a flashing sign which registers vehicle speed on the approach to the luggage loading area.
Airport security cameras recorded video of the incident and were turned over to police investigators.
