HARLINGEN — In light of the government shutdown that appears to have no end in sight, federal employees have been feeling the effects of missing paychecks.
Now they’re turning to local nonprofits for help.
United Way of Northern Cameron County in Harlingen is accepting diapers and baby formula through Jan. 31 to benefit federal employees affected by the impasse.
“We’ve received phone calls from various federal employees looking for ways to get assistance and one of the immediate needs is diaper and baby formula,” said United Way of Northern Cameron County Executive Director Jessica Belschner.
United Way personnel plan to work with the Border Patrol Agent Network and other federal agencies, such as ICE and the Transportation Security Administration to distribute the donations.
Belschner said the goal is to receive as many donations as possible to help several families that have been impacted.
“A lot of people are excited about the diaper and baby formula drive,” Belschner said. “To me, it’s a small way to do something. So if you’re feeling the need to do something this is a small way you can help.”
