Harlingen CISD to host annual Health and Wellness Kick Off

HARLINGEN — The goal is to make 2019 the community’s healthiest year yet.

Harlingen CISD, in conjunction with Healthy Harlingen and It’s Time Texas, will host its sixth annual Health and Wellness Kick Off tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at J. Lewis Boggus Stadium.

During the event, people will be able to participate in numerous exercise activities, such as walking or running around the stadium, using hula hoops, playing kickball, having sack races and using obstacle courses.

Additionally, there will be a showcase of local programs and businesses that promote healthy lifestyles to families.

The Health and Wellness Kick Off is free and open to the public.

Harlingen CISD Interim Athletic Director Luis Solorio describes the Health and Wellness Kick Off as a fun community event that brings the entire community together.

“It’s great to see the smiles on the kids’ faces during the mascot race, and campus staff intermingling and sharing ideas all while working toward having a healthier lifestyle,” Solorio said.

In prior years, Harlingen CISD’s annual Health and Wellness Kick Off was held in September to celebrate the new school year.

However, continuous inclement weather last September motivated the change of date.

This year’s Health and Wellness Kick Off ties in with the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge,” an eight-week competition with a goal of transforming community health.

“We’re a district where being healthy and fit is a lifestyle not just a department,” Solorio said. “We want our teachers to be healthy so they can be in the classrooms every day. We want our kids eating right so they can avoid childhood diabetes and have an overall healthy community.”
