Local ministry to host medical mission trip to Mexico

HARLINGEN — A local ministry aims to help thousands of poverty-stricken residents in small Mexican villages receive free medical and dental care this month.

The Way of the Cross Ministries, located in Harlingen, will host its annual MedFest mission trip at their new base Gateway Camp, in Tamaulipas, Mexico, from Jan. 16 to Jan. 22.

Director of Way of the Cross Ministries Benjamin Butler describes the mission trip as a good international event where many people come together to get work done for communities that don’t have medical attention readily available.

“We always feel good about being able to help,” Butler said. “We care about the people as servants of the lord and we want people to know that it’s not man that’s blessing them, it’s God.”

From pediatricians and gynecologists to neurologists and dentists, dozens of medical professionals from Mexico and the United States will team up to help Way of the Cross Ministries.

Currently, the ministry has about 70 volunteers from the United States and is seeking additional doctors, dentists and nurses who are interested in getting involved with the event.

There is a $500 registration fee for participants that will cover the cost of supplies, such as food, medicine and transportation.

In addition to administrating medical and dental work, there will be food, music, raffles, games and evangelization.

Additionally, ministry personnel plan to build a small church near the camp and are seeking volunteers with construction skills.
