Conference prepares families for school year

HARLINGEN —Never give up.

That’s the message Kayla McFarland took yesterday from a session at the Harlingen school district’s annual Parental Involvement District-Wide Conference.

The session was taught by Javier Trejo, and McFarland took his story to heart.

“He had a really hard life,” McFarland said. “He was able to travel around the world and motivate children.”

Trejo’s presentation “Never Giving Up” was one of 18 sessions, which also included sessions on parenting, testing and Career and Technology Education. More than 1,000 people signed up to attend the conference.

“It’s an excellent turnout,” said Jose Luis Cavazos, director of the school district’s parental involvement/dropout prevention program. Numerous information booths were also set up.

“We want to make sure we provide parents with all the right tools for them to come back and have their children enjoy academic success,” Cavazos said.

Dalia Garcia presented the session, “Keep Calm and Tackle the STAAR.”

“The turnout is pretty awesome,” said Garcia, an administrator for the district.

“We have a lot of interested parents looking for resources for student success,” she said.

Some parents were regulars to the yearly event and were pleased. Rafael Cuevas, who has two children in the district, wasn’t sure what session he would attend.

“There are so many choices,” Cuevas said. “All the sessions are good.”

Mary Correa has two grandchildren in the district. She attended the session, “Are You College and Career Ready” taught by Raul Alvarez and Juan Leal. She appreciated the presentation.

“It was very informative,” Correa said. “I liked the programs and certifications that students can get so they can have a job right after high school.”

Meanwhile, McFarland was looking forward to more sessions and gathering information from the booths as her two children, ages 1 and 7, tagged along.

“I have learned a lot of good techniques and strategies that I didn’t know before,” she said with a big smile.
