With only the weekend between Brownsville students and the first day of school, families lined up Saturday at the pavilion of La Esperanza Park for the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office Back to School Fair.
Community organizations, school representatives and doctor’s offices gave out supplies. Inside the community center, stylists and barbers gave free haircuts, and the Cameron County Public Health Department offered free vaccines.
District Attorney Luis Saenz said the aim of the event was to get children excited to returning to school. One of his priorities is public outreach, which led to the creation of the annual fair four years ago.
“It’s a lot of fun to come into the community and engage the public, and help them out a little bit,” he said. “A lot of our families in Brownsville, Cameron County, have limited resources. If you have two, three, four kids going to school, you’re looking at a couple hundred dollars for supplies.”
Saenz estimates that during is 12 years as a magistrate judge, eight out of every 10 jailed people he arraigned did not complete high school. As someone who was raised by a single mom, he credits her support for his schooling as the foundation of his career.
