This summer, the San Benito High School (SBHS) Choral Program held an All-State choir camp, during which 25 members of the Greyhound Chorale learned a variety of compositions — including foreign songs written in German, Latin, and Italian and some composed by renowned musicians such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Giuseppe Verdi.
According to Director of Choirs Eradio Martinez, the musical compositions will be used to compete in the first round of All-State Vocal Repertoire
auditions in late September. Local choir students will be competing against other vocalists from Brownsville, Los Fresnos, Harlingen, Weslaco, and Donna for a spot on the 2018-2019 All-State Choir.
If the students are selected in the first round, they will advance to Area competition in hopes of becoming All-State vocalists and performing in San Antonio, Texas, at the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/ Convention — the nation’s largest and premier convention for music educators.
“The large number of choral students who participated in the camp and are willing
to compete in this contest reflects the high quality of self-motivation and commitment to success that is prevalent in our district’s choral programs,” says Martinez.
The SBHS Choral program is directed by Martinez and assistants Anna Garcia and Berta Guerra.
