Four families in Cameron Park took part in a special kind of open house Friday.

They weren’t showing off their homes because they were preparing to move out. They were getting ready to move in.

The Community Development Corp. of Brownsville invited community members to celebrate the completion of four houses constructed through its Colonia Self-Help Homes program. The families, along with volunteers and contractors, helped each other build their homes.

“Just talking to the families we worked with, they’re just so proud, and it makes me want to do more,” said Arlene Laboy, SustainABLE house coordinator for the CDCB. “We do the best we can so it’s affordable for them.”

Laboy said the Colonia Self-Help Homes program also is taking applicants from Valle Escondido, La Paloma, Sebastian and Laguna Heights. Families — and volunteers on their behalf — contribute 36 hours per week toward constructing their home, and the homes are paid for by a combination of grants, forgivable loans and CDCB financing.
