Border Patrol: Man tried to use EMS unit to smuggle immigrants

U.S. Border Patrol agents today arrested a 30-year-old man who used an EMS vehicle to allegedly smuggle three Brazilian nationals at a border checkpoint.

U.S. Border Patrol agents today arrested a 30-year-old man who used an EMS vehicle to allegedly smuggle three Brazilian nationals at a border checkpoint.

Federal authorities said the man, a U.S. citizen, was driving a marked EMS vehicle and was attempting to make his way through the Falfurrias checkpoint.

After a Border Patrol canine alerted agents that something was inside the vehicle, the man was referred to the secondary inspection at the checkpoint, Border Patrol said in a press release.

Authorities said it was as this point that the driver of the vehicle fled the area at a high speed. The agents gave chase and the vehicle came to an abrupt stop.

Although the driver and immigrants inside the vehicle tried to bail out of the EMS unit, they were taken into custody, authorities said.

Authorities said the passengers in the vehicle were identified as Brazilian nationals who were illegally in the country.

The case remains under investigation.
