HARLINGEN — Temperatures will soar into record-breaking territory today in the Rio Grande Valley as a strong high-pressure system camps out over the southwestern United States.
Highs today will range from 99 along the gulf coast to up 110 degrees farther up the Valley. Tomorrow we can expect highs between 96 along the coast and 104 in the Upper Valley.
“Going into Wednesday we have a little bit more cloud cover and even a slight chance of rain coming in,” said Matthew Brady, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Brownsville. “That’s going to allow for our temperatures to decline slightly.
“It’s not going to be as hot but it will still certainly be hot for the Valley in summertime,” he added. “That will persist into the weekend as well.”
By mid-afternoon yesterday, temperatures had hit 106 degrees in McAllen and 100 in both Harlingen and Brownsville. Those triple-digit marks are expected to go even higher today.
The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity to calculate the “feels-like” temperature, will hit 108 to 113 across the region today.
Heat index numbers will slip back to between 105 to 110 degrees Wednesday through Friday.
