Quarterbacks Sanchez, Covarrubias eager to lead Honeys to IWFA title

The Harlingen Honeys will be reaching for the stars next Saturday when they take on the Texas Legacy at the Icon Lyfe Bowl 3 in Rockport.

But to have a chance, the Honeys will be depending heavily on the quarterback pair of Grace Covarrubias and Jessica Sanchez.

The Valley Morning Star had a chance to catch up with the duo and find out how they handle the pressure of being a QB.

JESSICA SANCHEZ

Q: What is the toughest part of being a quarterback?

JESSICA: Just staying composed throughout the entire game and knowing what each offensive player is doing in every play. If someone is in the wrong spot or runs the wrong route it throws the whole play off.

Q: What has this season meant to you?

JESSICA: This season has challenged me mentally and definitely physically. But I made a promise with a group of girls that we’d do this season together and now we are here. It’s amazing!

Q: What is your favorite sports quote?

JESSICA: ‘Somewhere between the athlete you’ve become and the hours of practice and the coaches (shout out to Coach O) who have pushed you, is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back… play for her”-Mia Hamm. That’s my favorite quote because every time I feel mentally or physically beat, I remember why I’m doing it and the girls I’m playing with. We all play for the love of the sport and each other.

Q: Pick something in your car right now and share why it’s important to you?

JESSICA: A button with my son’s picture on it because he is my everything.

Q: What is one word that describes you?

JESSICA: I think ‘quirky’ would be the best way to describe myself.

Q: What is one word that describes Grace?

JESSICA: I think hers would be ‘outgoing’ because once she gets comfortable around you she’s easy to get along and joke around with.

Q: What animal best describes your character?

JESSICA: I would have to say a shark.

Q: What animal would you describe Grace as?

JESSICA: She would have to be a queen honey bee because she’s a Harlingen Honey and a leader!

Q: If you were a wrestler what would be your entrance theme song?

JESSICA: Mine would have to be ‘Beast’ by Rob Bailey.

Q: What would be Grace’s song?

JESSICA: I think hers would be ‘Bartier Cardi’ by Cardi B because she’s always dancing when we’re warming up for games or at practice. It just screams Grace!

Q: If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing what would it be?

JESSICA: I would have to say pizza!

Q: What do you think Grace would want?

JESSICA: Time. She’s doing school, work and football. That’s commitment; keep it up!

GRACE COVARRUBIAS

Q: What is the toughest part of being a quarterback?

GRACE: The toughest part of being a quarterback would be controlling my emotions and keeping my composure in order to be the leader my team needs me to be.

Q: What has this season meant to you?

GRACE: This season has been an opportunity of personal growth and improvement. Being my second year, it has allowed me to grow as a player, teammate and person.

Q: What is your favorite sports quote?

GRACE: ‘It ain’t how hard you hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward,’ -Rocky Balboa. Because it can be a metaphor for anything in life.

Q: Pick something in your car right now and share why it’s important to you?

GRACE: Something in my car that means the most to me would be my music. Because no matter where I’m going or what I’m going to do, my music pumps me up and gets me ready for my day.

Q: What is one word that describes you?

GRACE: One word to describe me would be- ‘ambitious.’ I like to set goals and strive to accomplish them.

Q: What is one word that describes your teammate? Why?

GRACE: One word to describe Jess would be ‘motivational.’ She may be small and all smiles, but when it comes down to game time, she pumps everyone up.

Q: What animal best describes your character?

GRACE: An animal to describe my character would be a koala because I’m lovable and fun.

Q: What animal would you describe your teammate as?

GRACE: I’d describe Jess as a tiger because she’s small and fun, but she can be fierce as well.

Q: If you were a wrestler what would be your entrance theme song?

GRACE: My entrance song would be ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ by Marvin Gaye

Q: What would be your teammate’s song?

GRACE: Jess’ entrance song would have to be ‘The Final Countdown’ by Europe.

Q: If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

GRACE: If I had an unlimited supply of something it would be shoes.

Q: What do you think your teammate would have?

GRACE: I believe Jess would have an unlimited supply of pizza because of her pizza tattoo.
