San Benito to help community cast off with free fishing lessons

SAN BENITO — Hook, line and bring the whole family.

Start the summer off right with a little fishing lesson.

The San Benito Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a free fishing camp later this month.

Families with children over the age of 5 years old can register to learn more about the fishing laws and regulations and how to properly use fishing equipment.

Abby Cantu from the Parks and Recreation Department said the department was approached by Fishing’s Future, an organization dedicated to connecting families with nature through fishing.

Fishing’s Future provides education about the outdoor sport while passing down its “Leave-No-Trace” philosophy that encourages others to take care of the ocean.

According to Cantu, the organization wanted to help the department host a family fishing camp similar to ones they have hosted in other cities across the Valley.

“This will be the first fishing camp we have hosted,” Cantu said.

The camp will be taught by certified angler instructors and wildlife department staff who will go over water safety practices and proper catch and release techniques.

Participants will learn how to tie fishing knots and identify and measure fish.

Cantu is advising those wanting to participate to sign up as soon as possible.

Camp slots are limited to the first 30 participants who sign up for each day of the camp.
