Tropical development not expected to impact RGV

Although the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a broad surface low pressure just east of Belize and it has some potential to develop, the chance of the area moving toward South Texas is not expected.

Although the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a broad surface low pressure just east of Belize and it has some potential to develop, the chance of the area moving toward South Texas is not expected.

Tim Speece, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Brownsville, said a mid level ridge axis will remain over much of Texas and will prevent the surface from making its way westward.

“Also, longer range forecast models have been consistent over the last several days in moving this system steadily northwards eventually moving it inland over southeastern United States this coming Sunday/Monday,” Speece wrote in a email.

Speece said because of the mid level ridge over the region, the Rio Grande Valley will remain “very hot and rain free,” into the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Highs will be in the 90s and near 100 degrees
