Warriors’ Robledo struggles at state golf tourney

Qualifying for the UIL state golf tournament is no easy task. Just ask Santa Rosa’s Christa Robledo, who struggled this season but overcame the odds to earn her first-ever trip to Austin.

Heading into the two-day Class 3A tourney at Grey Rock Golf Course, Robledo had hoped to shoot a 90 or below. Unfortunately, the par-72 course, which features plenty of punishing hazards amid a bevy of stately oak trees, proved a little tough as she fired an opening-round 115 on Monday.

The senior will look to rebound in today’s final round. She is scheduled to tee off at 8:05 a.m. on hole No. 10 along with Kimberlee Scott of Harmony, Mary Rutland of Sabine and Lexi Mitchell of Edna.

Lyndy Laurell of Rockdale was the first-day leader as she fired a 75 to take a three-stroke lead over Paige Gilstrap of McGregor and a four-stroke advantage over Mason Garrett of Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.

Meanwhile, at the Class 5A tournament at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown, the Sharyland Lady Rattlers finished the day just three-strokes behind Midlothian for third place with a combined team score of 324. Grapevine was the Day 1 leader with a 305 followed by Magnolia at 320.

Laura Rodriguez led the charge for Sharyland with an opening-round 75 while Raquel Flores fired a 76.

The opening round did not go as well for Brownsville Veterans as the Lady Chargers shot a 351 to find themselves toward the bottom of the leaderboard.

Julie Lucio carried her team by shooting a 75 followed by Fahtima Avila, who fired an 82.
