CBP: Drug smuggler stopped when he strikes irrigation pipe

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were able to seize nearly $1.8 million in two marijuana busts.

According to an agency news release, agents saw a suspicious SUV with its headlights off leaving the Rio Grande near Los Indios on Saturday night.

They say as the driver tried to get away he slammed his vehicle into an irrigation pipe.

Nearly 1,700 pounds of marijuana packaged in 22 bundles were seized from inside the SUV. The narcotics have a street value of more than $1.3 million.

Last Thursday agents found a pickup filled with marijuana stuck in a field near Brownsville. Agents say the vehicle and drugs had been ferried across the Rio Grande.

They found 24 bundles of marijuana in the bed of the truck that weighed 576 pounds and had a street value of $460,000.

In both cases the drivers were arrested, the vehicles were seized and the marijuana turned over to the DEA.
