City gets ready for Cinco de Mayo

HARLINGEN — The city’s preparing for a big bash.

Mayor Chris Boswell will join Mexican consul Juan Carlos Cue Vega to make plans for Friday, May 4’s Cinco de Mayo celebration at Gutierrez Park.

“We trying to make it a more exciting show,” Cassandra Cuellar Consiglio, executive director of the Harlingen Convention & Visitors Bureau, said yesterday.

At the event, Boswell and Cue Vega are expected to give speeches commemorating the Batalla de Puebla, (Battle of Puebla), the battle that led Mexico to drive French rule out of the country.

The free event will feature Lluvia Vega, a semi-finalist in the Mexican Show La Voz Mexico who is touring in the United States to promote her new music.

The line-up includes Esencia Tamaholipeca, an award-winning Matamoros-based folkloric dance group, and Los Federales, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Community Outreach Group.

At the event, food vendors and Mexican artisans will sell their wares from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
