Mobile Medical Unit scheduled to visit Port Isabel

HARLINGEN — VA Texas Valley Costal Bend Health Care System’s Mobile Medical Unit is scheduled to be in Port Isabel tomorrow.

The MMU will be on site at the parking lot of the American Legion, Post 498 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Post 498 is at 819 South Garcia Street in Port Isabel.

Veterans in Port Isabel and surrounding communities are encouraged to visit the Mobile Medical Unit.

A permanent schedule with dates, addresses and service hours for the mobile medical unit is being finalized, and will be provided in a future announcement as soon as it is made available.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has deployed MMUs for more than 20 years. MMUs deliver primary care and other services to enrolled Veterans with limited access to VA healthcare services due to low population density, remoteness, or limited local demand for specialized services.

MMUs have also been used to identify and enroll Veterans who, for several reasons, may not have sought needed care and services at permanent VA facilities.

MMUs can also provide service continuity during emergencies when permanent sites of care are disabled or insufficient to meet the demand for healthcare services. The Mobile Medical Unit was recently used as part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ recovery efforts during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
