Boxing clinic to teach students self-defense

SAN BENITO — Take that extra energy to the mat.

Students across the Valley are invited to take part in the San Benito After School Program’s boxing and MMA clinic.

Students between the ages of 7 and 18 will have the opportunity to learn different techniques of self-defense.

Gyms and clubs in Harlingen and San Benito will be present to provide information on different fighting styles such as jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, judo and wrestling.

After-school site coordinator Abel Fonseca said students will be given demonstrations on the different techniques and will learn the basics of self-defense.

“There will be two students that are actually USA boxing members and will be demonstrating how to spar,” Fonseca said. “That way students will have an idea on how it works.”

The clinic is free and open to students outside of the San Benito school district.

This is the first boxing clinic the program is offering but Fonseca is hoping it will continue in the future.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout,” Fonseca said.

In addition to the boxing clinic, National Nursing and Rehab from Harlingen will be on-site to provide free blood pressure screenings for parents waiting for their children.

Rodeo Dental Orthodontics will also be present and will be handing out toothbrushes and information about dental care.
