Lionettes set for first-ever trip to regional quarterfinals

LA FERIA — As the old saying goes: “Where there is a will, there is a way.” And for the La Feria Lionettes soccer program, there has been plenty of will.

Last season, the La Feria boys soccer team had a dream run in the playoffs, reaching the regional semifinals before bowing out. This season, the girls team wants a deep postseason run of its own and their will may find the way.

After getting stuck in the area round of the playoffs for the past five consecutive seasons, this year the Lionettes were able to get over the dreaded second-round jinx by defeating Somerset 3-0 on Tuesday evening in Beeville.

Joscelyn Lizcano scored two goals while Jennifer Leal, assisted by Clarissa Garza, added the third in the win.

“In all of my years working with the La Feria girls soccer team, we have always had hard-working girls,” said La Feria head coach Adriana Carmona. “This year’s team is unique in its own way as previous teams have been in the past. But the girls are excited and happy for this experience.”

With the win, the Lionettes stretched their win streak to 12 consecutive victories after going an unblemished 10-0 in district action.

Next up, the Lionettes move on to the regional quarterfinals to take on Corpus Christi London at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Despite living in the moment of Tuesday’s historic victory, Coach Carmona’s message to the team this week is simple: “Let’s keep it going.”

“After the game Tuesday, I congratulated the girls for their hard work and reminded them that things are always possible when there is a will,” said Carmona. “We have to try our best every game so that later they will not have any regrets. We have not made it this far to just give up easily so let’s continue to make history.”
