Boating alert issued for gulf, bay waters

HARLINGEN — High winds riding in with the strong cold front that is barreling through the Valley this morning have sparked a small craft advisory for bay and gulf waters.

North winds and building seas are following the front, which may also bring showers and thunderstorms locally.

The boating advisory will be in effect until 6 p.m. in the Laguna Madre and until 10 p.m. in gulf waters.

Bay waters will be choppy today with winds from 20 to 25 knots and gusts to 30 knots.

In the gulf, seas will be from six to nine feet, with occasionally swells of 10 feet.

There is a high risk of rip currents along the lower Texas coast, including the beaches of South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach, through tonight.

In inland Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo counties, high temperatures will range from the high 60s to the low 70s today. Chances of a thunderstorm are around 40 percent to 50 percent today.
