Rotary cancels regatta due to conflicting events

SAN BENITO — The kayak regatta is a no go.

Well, at least for now.

The Rotary Club of San Benito’s annual kayak regatta was expected to draw large crowds and kayak enthusiasts in May.

But the event originally scheduled for Cinco de Mayo has been put on hold.

Rotary Club president Alma Ortiz said the cancellation has to do with a scheduling conflict.

With elections and various Cinco de Mayo celebrations happening throughout the Valley, Ortiz said the board felt there was too much happening on the scheduled date.

“We truly appreciate the support we’ve received from our sponsors and the community,” Ortiz said in an email.

During the initial planning of the event late last year, the club ran into snags with the city when negotiations between the two fell through.

The club announced in January the event would continue and they would take the lead with the help of the Cameron County Irrigation District.

Over the past several months, the club had been updating its Facebook page with information regarding the event.

Vendors and entertainers were announced.

Just two weeks before the cancellation, the club announced a petting zoo and musical performances would be available for those looking for more than kayaking.

The club hoped the event would attract hundreds of spectators over the course of the day with dozens competing in the regatta.

The event was expected to raise a couple thousand dollars that would have been donated to the Boys and Girls Club of San Benito for a gym renovation.

The club has not indicated a date for the event to be rescheduled.

Ortiz said the board is currently looking for a new date that is conflict-free.
