Family-friendly event to host elementary rock concert

SAN BENITO — Ready to rock?

The San Benito AfterSchool program will host a live, outdoor concert tonight at Angela G. Leal Elementary School.

The concert will feature rock bands from several schools within the district.

Parents and families are invited to take part in this event and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy music performed by elementary and middle school students.

San Benito CISD rock bands began as a music program that was developed by the district’s AfterSchool Program.

Afterschool program coordinator Albert Sanchez said for a lot of students, the program is the first time they will pick up instruments.

Through the program students learn about teamwork, patience and how to tune and adjust their guitars.

Sanchez said the biggest development is the self-esteem and self-confidence students receive from the program.

“You just look at where they started and where they are now and you can see the change,” Sanchez said.

This is the first outdoor event the program has hosted.

While the program hosts a showcase featuring all performing arts performances, this is the only showcase that will feature music alone.

Sanchez said more than 30 songs from each campus will be performed.

Students from four elementary schools and three middle schools will perform in rock bands and dance teams.
