Big Squeeze Accordion Contest set at LFHS today

LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos High School Conjunto Halcón will be the featured performer at the Los Fresnos Talent Showcase of the Big Squeeze Accordion Contest Friday at the LFHS Theater.

The contest, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. The Conjunto Halcón will perform at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Nine talent showcases are scheduled throughout the state, including one in La Joya Saturday. Up to 12 finalists (three from each category) will be selected in early April by a panel of judges and will perform at the Big Squeeze Concert and Finals at the Bullock Museum in Austin on Saturday, April 21.

At that time, four Grand Prize Winners will be selected. The four Big Squeeze 2018 Grand Prize Winners will receive a prize package valued at more than $4,000..

LFHS Conjunto director Juan Longoria Jr. is one of Texas Folklife’s stars and amazing success stories who won this event in 2007/ “His career is a model of what we are trying to do to help encourage traditional Texas music. After winning our first Big Squeeze Accordion Contest back in 2007 he went on to found and become the first director of the Los Fresnos High School Conjunto Program where he helps train the next generations of traditional Texas musicians.”

Texas Folklife is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to presenting and preserving the diverse cultures and living heritage of Texas and is designated by the National Endowment for the Arts as the Folk and Traditional Arts organization for the state.
