Osiel Cardenas Jr., 26, waived scheduled preliminary examinations and a detention hearing on Wednesday and Thursday, court records show.
Cardenas Jr., who was arrested by Brownsville police at 2 a.m. on March 15 in the parking lot of the Sky Bar & Lounge, is accused of waving a gun around the bar, displaying a Cameron County District Attorney’s badge and threatening patrons with arrest if they didn’t leave the premises.
Brownsville police arrested and charged Cardenas Jr. with public intoxication, false report to a police officer and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
On Friday morning, U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya III ruled Cardenas is a flight risk.
Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said Cardenas Jr. somehow obtained the badge from the law office of a former assistant district attorney who told authorities he noticed it was missing after hearing of his client’s arrest.
Ismael Hinojosa, the former assistant district attorney, represented Cardenas Jr. in a petition for a driver’s license, court documents show.
Cardenas Jr. is also facing a federal charge related to being a felon in possession of a weapon.
