Free workout classes open to public

SAN BENITO — Summer is right around the corner and with the warmer weather comes the need to look good for the beach.

Get a head start on that beach body with workout classes being offered to residents of the city.

Popular group workout classes such as Zumba, yoga and toning and strength training are being held in San Benito for free.

Monday through Friday, different classes will be held at various times to accommodate different schedules.

The programming is a joint effort between UTRGV-Brownsville and Tu Salud Si Cuenta, a community-wide campaign dedicated to addressing obesity and associated chronic diseases in the lower Valley.

To keep community members moving toward a healthier lifestyle, classes are free and provided year round.

Community outreach coordinator for Tu Salud Si Cuenta, Letty Gomez, said classes began four years ago to provide healthy activities for residents in the area.

Classes are taught by volunteers and qualified instructors who provide engaging workouts for people at all fitness levels.

Gomez said classes tend to bring a good group of people out and average around 20 people per class.

Equipment needed for certain classes such as toning and strength are provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own.

More than 10 classes are offered throughout the week in San Benito with more classes being hosted throughout the lower Valley.
