Vandals damage Visitors Center sandcastle

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Spring Break hadn’t even begun before the Island became the victim of vandals.

Early Friday morning, about 1:40 a.m., four “male subjects” vandalized the sandcastle in front of the Visitors Center, causing major damage, officials reported yesterday. One of them climbed the flagpole and stole the South Padre Island flag. They then headed southbound on the frontage road, officials said.

Large chunks of sand were knocked off the massive sandcastle. The estimated cost of the damage is $24,000.

Those responsible could be charged with criminal mischief, a state jail felony, and theft, a Class C misdemeanor.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Island Police Department at 956-761-5454.
