Soccer notes: Final playoff spot up for grabs in District 32-6A

With two games remaining in the boys District 32-6A regular season, Harlingen High, Harlingen South and San Benito are mathematically still in the playoff hunt.

Brownsville Rivera leads the league with 32 points, Brownsville Hanna is second with 30 points and Los Fresnos rounds out the top three with 27 points.

However, while the top three teams might be set for the postseason, the fourth seed is still very much up in the air. Harlingen High has a district record of 4-8 with 13 points while San Benito and Harlingen South are also 4-8 and have 12 points.

In order for Harlingen to punch its ticket to the playoffs, the Cardinals need to win their next two games against Brownsville Hanna and San Benito to secure the fourth seed.

San Benito, meanwhile, needs to win its two remaining games and hope for both Harlingen South and Harlingen to lose their games.

South is in a similar position and needs to win out and hope for Harlingen and San Benito to lose Friday.

LA FERIA BOYS AND GIRLS TOP DISTRICT STANDINGS: While the La Feria Lionettes are 8-0 in District 31-4A, the team has had some highs and lows this season. With two games left on the regular season, La Feria head coach Adriana Carmona does not want to leave anything to chance.

“We have had our ups and downs and that’s why we need to persevere if we want to get to the next level,” said Carmona. “We always aim for our obtainable goals and we are always seeking room for improvements.

“We still have two games and we cannot be overconfident. I always tell the team, ‘you never know what can happen, therefore we must always be ready for whatever might happen.’”

Like their girls counterparts, the La Feria boys team is also on top of the District 31-4A standings. The Lions top the standings with 18 points, Rio Hondo is second with 15 points, Port Isabel has nine points and Raymondville is fourth with six points.

Despite the Lions losing their first game of the district season to PI, the Lions have pushed forward and are on the verge of winning the district title outright with a win over Idea Frontier Monday. La Feria has already clinched a share of the district title and the first seed in the postseason race, however should they lose then the Lions would share the title with Rio Hondo (should they win).
