Students race custom-built electric cars

San Benito and other Rio Grande Valley students recently participated in the district’s first-ever Murphy 2.1 Race at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The 90-minute race and at least three required pit changes featured electric race cars designed and built by students as part the GreenPower USA Electric Car initiative.

According to Mary Maney, San Benito High School Math Teacher and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) sponsor, the goal of the initiative is to provide advances in education in the area of sustainable engineering and technology.

“The idea behind this series of races is to help our students gain insight about the electric cars when they are under race conditions with other cars present and racing,” said Maney, explaining that all participants benefit from lessons learned and/or observed during multi-car practice runs.

San Benito has two race teams and boasts the only all-female team in the Valley.
