The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, the largest produce port of entry in the United States, has closed traffic to cars in both directions due to a truck incident Friday morning.
Officials are unaware of any injuries and, as of late morning, are unaware how long the bridge is expected to be closed.
Dante Galleazi, president of Texas International Produce Association, said the closure is limited to cars and not commercial traffic.
Edgar Delgadillo, board president for the bridge, said Pharr is working to help resolve the incident quickly.
Mexican customs sent an email to those in the trade industry Friday morning reporting the traffic’s closure. A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said the incident occurred on the Mexican side of the bridge.
Jorge Torres, a McAllen-based customs broker, said there was a mechanical failure of a Caterpillar shipment. Caterpillar, the construction machinery and equipment company, had an over-sized truckload on the bridge. Officials are trying to determine how to get the truck off the bridge and resume traffic.
“We’re trying to figure out alternate routes for the trade,” Torres said. “We just don’t know how long it will be closed.”
