The University of Texas System Board of Regents gave The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) the green light to construct a new building for the ever-growing UTRGV School of Medicine. The project will be funded through the Permanent University Funds (PUF) that the Board of Regents previously pledged at the inception of UTRGV. The expansion will cost $12.2 million.
At its February meeting, held Monday, Feb. 26, and Tuesday, Feb. 27, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved adding the construction of the UTRGV School of Medicine Team Based Learning Center to its list of capital improvement projects. This decision allows the project to advance to its design phase. The center will be an extension of the Medical Education Building, located on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus, and will be located adjacent to that building.
“We are grateful to the UT System Board of Regents for supporting the UTRGV School of Medicine,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey.
The 24,000-square-foot building will include individual study space and additional student learning space for the School of Medicine’s team-based learning and interprofessional education programs, as well as faculty and administrative offices.
“This new building will provide much-needed space for our students, faculty and staff,” said John H. Krouse, dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine and vice president for Health Affairs at UTRGV. “The center will also allow us to enhance the learning experience for our students and allow the School of Medicine to advance its mission to expand medical education in the Valley and train the next generation of innovative and compassionate physicians.”
