San Benito school board to vote on rezoning proposal

SAN BENITO — Tonight during a school board meeting, the San Benito board of trustees will vote on a rezoning proposal presented by superintendent Nate Carman.

The proposal calls for the closure of two elementary campuses, Landrum Elementary and Dr. Raul Garza Elementary.

If approved, students and staff will be rezoned to different campuses and both facilities will be re-purposed into the district’s first STEAM academy and a permanent location for the Positive Redirection Center.

The move aims to help the district to be more innovative and competitive with local charter schools.

Town halls were held last month and Carman presented his proposal before opening up the floor for questions and comments by parents and community members.

The board will make its final decision tonight during the regular board meeting held at the Administration Board Room at 6:30 p.m.

If passed, the district is prepared to rezone and open the 2018-2019 school year with a new STEAM academy.
