Island good enough to be a port of call

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Mayor Dennis Stahl’s mission to bring more tourists to the Island by attracting the cruise ship industry is on a roll.

SPI Cruise Group Issued its initial report on Island’s suitability as a port of call. Their analysis finds South Padre Island well-positioned to be the first new U.S. port of call in a half-century.

“I’m very encouraged with the study,” Stahl said. “We have obviously hit some kind of nerve with the cruise liners.”

Stahl said three of the four major cruise liners want to meet with the city about the idea.
