RAYMONDVILLE — A runoff will decide the candidate who will replace longtime City Commissioner Zeke Cavazos.
On Tuesday, city commissioners are expected to call a March 24 runoff in which candidates Edward Gonzales and Irene Moreno Cavazos will vie to fulfill the remainder of Cavazos’ term.
Early voting will run from March 7 to 20, Mary Hope Barrera, Willacy County’s elections administrator, said yesterday.
In last Saturday’s special election, Gonzales, district director for state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., received 233 votes while Cavazos picked up 151 votes.
Meanwhile, two candidates fell short of making the runoff. Cristina Moreno Correra, a special education supervisor, took 127 votes, while Joel Robles, a retired juvenile officer, finished with 21 votes.
On Tuesday, commissioners are expected to canvas the vote, City Manager Eleazar Garcia said.
Garcia estimated the runoff will cost the city $12,000 to $13,000.
The county’s elections department will conduct the runoff.
Cavazos, who won his fifth term to the commission’s Place 4 seat last May, died in October after battling cancer, leaving more than three years remaining in his four-year term.
