LETTERS: On border wall, local congressmen and healthier living

Trump’s border wall

So what happened to the border wall that was going to be built with Mexico’s money? Because millions of Donald Trump’s believers voted for him on that promise. So now what we get is “I better get the billions of dollars of our tax dollars” and if not I’ll shut down the federal government. That’s the country that he wants to make great again.

Trump and his party have the majority of votes in both the House and Senate, for now. So whatever happens is their doing. On the paying taxes deal, remember Trump said when he was running for president “I don’t pay taxes because I am smart.” He bragged that he knows how to use the loopholes that the government has created for the filthy rich to use so that they can keep their money in their pockets!

I have a great idea: Let’s make “debilitating and exhausting” Mary Martinez happy this year. Let’s open up the our country, have the Border Patrol stand down, have CBP open up the bridges, airports, seaports to all who want to enter no documents required, no questions asked. No more borders, no walls, if you can run, jump or swim across the border; we will welcome you with open arms. No matter the cost to our nation’s economy, security or well being; we will allow all who want to migrate to America to do so without impunity. Ms. Martinez: What you desire is the downfall of America. To quote the former Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer: “A nation without borders is like a house without walls — it collapses. And that is what is going to happen to our wonderful America.” Try migrating to Japan, Germany, Russia or even Mexico, they all have immigrant quotas to protect the aforementioned problems. Wake up Mary. The very freedoms you enjoy are because we have borders!

A lot of ‘hot air’

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, has a lot to say but he should put actions to his words. His voting record in Congress is less than

5 percent. And U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, is a lot of hot air. His voting record is about 30 percent. That doesn’t say much for Democrats, does it? These men are getting paid with our tax dollars. It would be nice of they showed up at meetings. Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, both of Texas, have stellar voting records, in comparison; over 90 percent for both, says the Faith & Freedom Coalition.

Healthier living in 2018

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution? Many of us do. Unfortunately, not all of us are actually able to stick to these resolutions. Here is an idea: Make your resolutions and if they do not work out you can always get back to them at any time of the year. Never give up; it is never too late to have a new beginning. Being healthy is always a good idea at any time of the year. According to Google, the definition of healthy is “In good health.” Most of us are familiar with that definition. Healthy also means “not diseased,” “normal, natural and desirable.” While some diseases are uncontrollable, there are others that we acquire due to the way we take care of our body throughout our lives. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are more deaths, illness and disabilities from substance abuse than from any other preventable health condition.

The No. 1 cause of death by unnatural causes is cardiovascular disease; excessive alcohol consumption is a major risk factor. Other ailments linked to excessive alcohol consumption are alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke and breast cancer. The American Heart Association cautions people not to drink alcohol heavily. We, the Prevention Resource Center for Region 11, challenge you to start off the New Year consuming non-excessive amounts of alcohol. That is just one step closer to being healthy and happy! Let’s bring In the New Year healthier!
