Two people were hurt when a fire broke out Saturday afternoon at a popular San Benito bakery. The blaze happened at La Especial Bakery at 350 W. Robertson St.
San Benito Police Chief Michael Galvan says the owner of the bakery and one of his officers were taken to an area hospital.
Galvan said the fire caused extensive damage to the ceiling and roof of the building. He said the heat from the bakery’s ovens may have triggered the fire.
The front of the bakery appears to have escaped damage. Robertson Street was closed to traffic.
La Especial, also known by customers as Ornelas Bakery, has been in business for at least 50 years and is well known for its pan dulce.
