Sheriff: Armed robbery suspect may be in Matamoros

Authorities believe a suspected knife-wielding robber who held up a convenience store Tuesday afternoon may be in Mexico.

Authorities believe a suspected knife-wielding robber who held up a convenience store Tuesday afternoon may be in Mexico.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio identified the suspect as 22-year-old Sergio Garcia Carmona, a Mexican national who is familiar with Brownsville and Matamoros.

Earlier this week Lucio released surveillance video from the Corner Market at 2301 Carlos Ave. in Cameron Park showing a man authorities say is Carmona threaten a clerk with a large knife before taking all the cash in the store’s register.

The video was released with the hopes that some community member would know they suspect. And the community responded, Lucio said.

“Yesterday, they gave us a call and said they knew the name of the individual, but they didn’t know his last name,” Lucio said.

However, based on the first name, more members of the community were able to help investigators determine that their suspect is Carmona.

“Again, I want to thank the community, they gave us the name of the individual,” Lucio said.

On Friday morning, authorities released two photos showing Carmona and asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the sheriff’s department. Tipsters remain anonymous, Lucio said. Anyone with information about Carmona is asked to call (956) 554-6700 or (956) 350-5551.

Lucio also said that investigators are unlikely to find the stolen money and that authorities had not recovered the knife used in the armed robbery.

Mexican law enforcement is cooperating in the investigation as well, Lucio said.
