Brownsville police this weekend identified the 24-year-old man they accuse of stealing an elderly woman’s purse as she walked down the road.

Jose Ernesto Trejo-Guerrero is charged with theft from a person.

According to a press release, investigators located the blue Ford Ranger Edge with a tool box in its bed that is shown in video footage of the crime police released last week. That led police to Trejo-Guerrero, who allegedly gave a statement implicating himself, according to police.

At 7:20 a.m. last Wednesday morning, the 81-year-old woman was walking on the 800 block of East Adams when a man driving a blue pickup pulled off the side of the road, exited the truck, shadowed the woman, and snatched her purse before taking off from the scene, according to video of the incident released by police.

Police Spokesman J.J. Trevino said Trejo-Guerrero was given a $7,500 bond, but that the suspect also has an immigration detainer.

According to court records, Trejo-Guerrero is currently being held at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito.
