Early voters in Port Isabel, Los Fresnos and Brownsville will head to new polling places for the March 6 primary. Cameron County commissioners approved the changes during last week’s meeting.

Voting will no longer take place at the Cameron County Elections Office on East Harrison Street. That location has been changed to the new county building at 835 E. Levee St.

“For people who were used to the main office location, they’ll be able to use the LeveeBuilding while they’re doing their county business,” County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said.

The Port Isabel City Commission passed a resolution in support of moving its early voting location to PortIsabelCity Hall at 305 E. Maxan St. In the resolution, members cited their desire to centralize voting in the city to one place, boost voter turnout and build accessibility as reasons supporting the change.

Both parties have approached Garza at different times, asking for the polling location to be moved, he said. Previously, early voting administered by the county has taken place at the Ochoa County Annex on Highway 100.

“I think everything we’re doing is trying to encourage voter participation,” he said. “If people are discouraged by parking or exiting on 100, I think this is a positive step forward.”

Los Fresnos early voting for the March 6 primary will be held at the LosFresnosCommunity Center at 204 N. Brazil St., a change Garza said also had strong support from the community.
