Meet the Chordettes: High school singers hit all the right notes

HARLINGEN — They’re all sopranos, but together they’ve figured out how to hit those highs and lows.

Four powerful singers in the Harlingen High School choir grabbed everyone’s attention recently with their live performances of both vintage and modern classics.

“I just love music and I just love the fact that Mr. Reyes, our accompanist, put together a quartet,” said Jessica Valdez, 17, a senior in the Chordettes.

She made frequent references to Ruben Reyes for creating first a trio and then adding a fourth singer, Gabby Garza, 15.

“I feel like it’s an honor because they needed an alto,” Gabby said.

That has been one of the biggest challenges, to find singers who can hit all the notes in their pieces.

“We work some of it out on our own,” said Bianca Lopez, 16.

They’ve delivered two performances so far, one for the school’s Veterans Day ceremony and another at the school’s Christmas program.

The Veterans Day performance took attendees back to the 1940s with an Andrews Sisters classic.

“He had a boogie style that no one else could play,” they sang. “He was the top man at his craft. But then his number came up and he was gone with the draft.”

They were a trio then, and afterwards Gabby arrived to make it a quartet which sang Text me Merry Christmas at an event Dec. 5.

“This holiday, you’ll be far away, and I’ll be alone,” they sang.

The four singers had differing observations about both songs

“Text me Merry Christmas was more of like a pop kind of song and it relates to what kids are into nowadays,” Jessica said. “Texting, there’s a snapchat that we mention in the lyrics.”

Plans for the fledgling musical group are uncertain at this point, but they look forward to new musical challenges when they return in the spring.

“I feel very confident in the group that I am working with now in the quartet,” said Mary Kate Holder, 16.

“As for the spring, our pianist, he has the idea of doing Valentine grams where we will be going into classrooms and singing something,” she said.
