Border Patrol: Suspect drives SUV into Rio Grande

A group of suspected drug smugglers drove their SUV into the Rio Grande to avoid being arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents.

According to a USBP news release, Harlingen agents spotted a green Chevrolet suburban being loaded with bundles of marijuana on a road near Santa Maria, in southern Cameron County.

Agents say as they approached the vehicle the suspect drove the suburban into the river and then he and six other suspects swam back to Mexico.

The Border Patrol says they discovered eight bundles of marijuana weighing more than 500 pounds and a street value of $400,000.
