Power play: Lady Cards-Lady Panthers highlights short week

With the Christmas break quickly approaching, this week is a short one for most area basketball programs. However, their are still a few key contests that stand out. Here are five to look out for:

1. HARLINGEN HIGH AT

WESLACO HIGH:

In a rivalry that has proven to be one of the fiercest around for the past couple of seasons, the Lady Cardinals visit the Lady Panthers at 7:30 tonight. Both squads enter the contest undefeated in District 32-6A play at 2-0 with Harlingen most recently beating Brownsville Rivera and Weslaco upending Brownsville Hanna. Last year the two split their regular-season contests with the Lady Cardinals winning the first game 47-41 and the Lady Panthers winning the second 58-32.

2. BROWNSVILLE HANNA AT HARLINGEN SOUTH:

The Lady Hawks began the District 32-6A season with a disappointing loss to Harlingen High. However, last Friday they rebounded with a big overtime road win over Los Fresnos. The 1-1 Lady Hawks will look to make it two straight when they host the Lady Eagles at 7:30 tonight.

3. SAN BENITO AT

BROWNSVILLE RIVERA:

The Lady Greyhounds are 2-0 in District 32-6A after wins over Los Fresnos and, most recently, Weslaco East. They will look to improve to 3-0 tonight when they travel to Brownsville to take on the 0-2 Lady Raiders. Tipoff is set for 7:30 tonight.

4. LA FERIA AT PORT ISABEL

GIRLS-BOYS DOUBLEHEADER:

The La Feria Lionettes and PI Lady Tarpons began District 32-4A action a week ago and enter tonight’s 6:30 contest both at 2-0 in league play. The visiting Lionettes have wins over Hidalgo and Zapata while the Lady Tarpons have victories over Zapata and Raymondville. The girls match will be followed by the Lions and Tarpons in their conference opener. Tipoff is estimated to be at 8 p.m.

5. SANTA ROSA AT SAN PERLITA:

After dropping back-to-back games, the Santa Rosa Warriors snapped their skid with a big 64-45 win over La Feria last week. The Warriors (3-8) will now look to keep momentum alive as they head to San Perlita to take on the Trojans at 7:30 tonight. The Trojans, who advanced to the third round of the playoffs a year ago, have been struggling lately and are 0-5 on the young season.
