Sure feels like winter: Overnight conditions raised chance for snow

Dreaming of a white Christmas?

Although it’s not quite Christmas yet, there was a chance the Rio Grande Valley would see snow early this morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory had been issued for the entire Valley, indicating snow was possible, the National Weather Service Office in Brownsville reported.

But although snow was forecast, it wasn’t going to be the same amount that occurred Dec. 24, 2004, and blanketed the entire Valley.

There was a chance the western part of the Valley could see snow between midnight and 4 a.m. today, the Upper Valley between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. and the Lower Valley between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., the NWS reported.

Possible snow amounts were 1 to 2 inches in the western part of the Valley, half an inch to 1 inch in the San Manuel/Sarita area, and a half inch or less for the Harlingen, Brownsville Edinburg and McAllen.

Also, a wind chill advisory had been issued for the entire Valley that was to remain in effect until 8 a.m. today. Wind chills were expected to be in the upper 20s.

A possible frost-light freeze is expected Saturday morning.

Forecasters said the advisories were issued due to an upper level trough of low pressure that was to move toward deep South Texas and the Valley. The combination of abundant moisture and colder air moving through the area increased the chances for possible snowfall.

The NWS warned boaters from going out into the Gulf waters today because of dangerous winds and high waves.

Parts of Texas experienced snow Thursday, with Texans posting pictures of snow on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Today’s highs will be in the upper 40s, with tonight’s lows in the 30s. The highs for Saturday will be near upper 60s.
