Greyhound fans hold send-off for team

SAN BENITO — The city stood behind the Mighty Greyhounds as the football team left for the regional playoff game, yesterday afternoon.

Williams Road was lined with excited fans eager to wave goodbye to the San Benito High School football team as they made their way toward Corpus Christi.

The community was invited to join the district in cheering on the team as they left for the regional playoff game against the San Antonio O’Connor Panthers.

Greyhound supporters sporting purple and gold fan shirts held banners and waved flags as the team headed north.

Monica Munoz, a former Greyhound and mother of defensive lineman Bernie Munoz, stood on the side of the road in a crowd of purple, cheering on her son.

“San Benito has the best spirit in the Valley,” Munoz said.

“All of this just for a send-off,” Munoz said, pointing to the crowd.

In anticipation of the big game, Superintendent Dr. Nate Carmen sent out a statement earlier this week, issuing an early release for students and faculty, yesterday.

According to the district website, the early release allowed students to drive to last night’s game and arrive safely without having to rush.

The district wasn’t the only ones making accommodations for the football game.

The city of San Benito issued a press release notifying residents of potential changes to the Dec. 9 date of the town’s Christmas parade in the event of a win.

City officials and the Special Events Board met Thursday to discuss a “Plan B” for the annual Christmas Parade.
