Host Lionettes open Wiseman tourney with win

LA FERIA — Day 1 of the 44th Annual Tommie Wiseman Tournament featured some close and not-so-close games as the 16-team event saw eight teams move one step closer to the championship game, which is set to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

TOURNAMENT HOST: The La Feria Lionettes started the day off with a 47-33 victory over Brownsville Jubilee. The Lionettes outscored the Lady Titans 13-9 in the first, 11-11 in the second, 13-4 in the third and 11-9 in the forth.

Myah Salas led the Lionettes with 15 points. Salas score nine points in the first period and six in the third.

“I think the girls played well today,” said La Feria head coach Angel Martinez. “I think we did a good job with our defensive pressure in keeping a good Lady Trojans team to just 32 points.

“But we need to do a better job staying out of foul trouble early and finishing at the rim.”

In other tournament action, Rio Hondo defeated Edinburg Economedes 48-18, Mercedes defeated Port Isabel 43-24, Rio GrandeCity beat Lyford 45-18 and Santa Rosa fell to La Joya 56-51.

CLOSE GAMES: PSJA High and BrownsvilleRivera needed an extra period to decide the victor in Thursday’s third game of the day. After playing to a 37-37 stalemate, the Lady Bears scored eight points in overtime to defeat the Lady Raiders 45-42.

For the Lady Bears, DarianaGalvan led the team with 14 points while teammate Sara Jo Hernandez added 13 points. Ashley Pecina contributed 12 points, however six points came in overtime where she went 6 for 6 from the foul line.

For the Lady Raiders, Jacequilne Montes led the team with 15 points, Mayra Martinez added eighth points while teammates Kourtney Shears and Kaylyn Samano each contributed seven points.

PSJA moves on to face host La Feria today at 1:30 pm.

NOT SO CLOSE: Defending tournament champion PSJA North looked like the team to beat after crushing Zapata 88-45. The Lady Raiders dominated the contest from start to finish as Catie Rodriguez scored 33 points in the game. Rodriguez hit for 12 points in the first period, two in the second, 16 in the third and five points in the fourth.

PSJA North began the game on a 16-2 run and outscored Zapata in every quarter.

Jannely Zuniga added 14 points for the Lady Raiders and teammate Clarissa Alvarez scored 11 points on the afternoon.

The Lady Raiders will play La Joya Juarez-Lincoln at 9 a.m. today.
