RAYMONDVILLE — Investigators are working with the Texas Rangers on the case of a hit-and-run driver who critically injured a cyclist.
Detectives Tomas Gomez and Denise Ledesma were meeting with Rangers yesterday morning, a police dispatcher said.
By noon, no arrests had been made in the case, the dispatcher said.
Meanwhile, victim Ruben Serna’s condition was improving, Carolyn Schwarz, a nursing supervisor at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, said late yesterday morning.
Serna, who had been listed in critical condition after the accident, was “critical but slightly improved,” Schwarz said.
Earlier this week, Police Chief Uvaldo Zamora said police appeared to be closer to identifying the driver of a light-colored SUV believed to be the vehicle that struck Serna, 56, as he rode a bicycle Saturday morning.
Investigators were inspecting the SUV for any signs that it might be the suspect vehicle, Zamora said.
Police are trying to match witnesses’ descriptions of a vehicle pulling a boat believed to have struck Serna as he rode his bicycle on the shoulder of the road in front of the Otis Klar Head Start center on East FM 186 about 7 a.m. Saturday.
Zamora said the suspect appears to be the so-called person of interest whose photograph was captured by a local Stripes convenience store camera after the accident.
Serna, believed to be from Houston, was living in Raymondville, where he is believed to have been working at an area ranch, Zamora said.
